    Application of chlorine dioxide in hospital sewage treatment

    Hospital sewage (including biological products, medical wastewater, etc.) contains various viruses, germs, parasite eggs and some toxic and harmful substances to varying degrees. If not disinfected, these viruses, germs and parasite eggs will cause the occurrence and spread of various diseases in the environment, which is a serious threat to human health. Therefore, the disinfection of hospital sewage is a key step in hospital sewage treatment.

     

    The "Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard" (GB8978-1996) stipulates that after disinfection of hospital sewage, the following standards should be met:

     


    The disinfectants used in domestic hospitals are mainly chlorine dioxide, liquid chlorine and sodium hypochlorite.

    Although liquid chlorine is relatively low in price, it is easy to leak and has poor safety. It is not easy to use in crowded hospitals.

    Although there is no safety hazard, the sodium hypochlorite generator has high equipment cost, easy damage to key components, large volume, high power consumption and high salt consumption, and the actual operating cost far exceeds its theoretical estimate.

    The chlorine dioxide generator is simple in chemical production, reliable in operation, low in cost, and basically trouble free. In addition to the strong killing effect on common fungi, it also has a good disinfection effect on viruses with strong chlorine tolerance, spores and heterotrophic bacteria in waterway systems.

     

    Design Parameters

    In the selection of equipment for hospital sewage, the following three parameters should be used: daily displacement, lifting pump flow, and dosage of disinfectant per ton of sewage to determine the type of equipment. The daily displacement is calculated according to the following reference numbers: for hospitals with more than 500 beds, the average sewage volume is about 1200L/bed/d. The daily displacement can be calculated by calculation. The dosage of disinfectant is 25g-30g/ton, and the infectious disease hospital should increase it appropriately.

    Due to different design processes and the length of work required to treat sewage in each hospital (usually 4-8 hours/day). Therefore, the maximum displacement of the lift pump is also different. The shorter the working time of the same amount of sewage, the larger the pump flow and the larger the dose. Equipment selection has also increased accordingly.

    In some areas, there is a maximum limit value (<0.5 ml/L) for the residual chlorine in the sewage. The sewage should be dechlorinated before being discharged after disinfection.

     

    Equipment selection

    There are two aspects to choose from, on the one hand, the determination of the device model and on the other hand the choice of device type.

    Equipment type (g/hr) = displacement of lift pump (ton/hour) × effective chlorine dosage per ton of sewage (g/hr).

    Smaller hospitals (below 200 beds) can use chlorine dioxide disinfectant powder or solution, and hospitals with more than 200 beds can use high-efficiency chlorine dioxide generator for automatic control.
